Brazilian patamusician and multi-percussionist, Nyllo Canela has been passionate about world percussion for over fifteen years. Curious, he explores and seeks to broaden his horizons in search of new sounds. He started out with master Brazilian percussionists such as Orlando Costa, Peu Meurray and Arrepiado, who taught him samba, afoxé, samba-reggae, maracatu and other exotic rhythms. His musical sensibility has led him to share the stage with great international artists: Seu Jorge, Paula Lima, Monica Passos, Benito de Paula, Arlindo and Sombrinha, and Chico César, to name but a few.
Nyllo Canela customises his percussion set to suit the place, the moment, the audience and the inspiration. His interest in contemporary, folk and experimental music is shaped by new encounters and musical sharing. He has tirelessly pursued his research and mastered other percussion instruments: the Indian tabla, the Arab derbake, the tama, the bata, the cajon, the djembe and other instruments made from recycled objects such as PVC pipes, gas canisters, buckets and tyres.
In 2012, he released his first album with the group Saramandaia, which went on to enjoy a string of successes and good reviews. He also got involved in a socially deprived area of Sao Vicente (Brazil), where he worked with local children to develop the Trash Re-percussion (Re-percutindo Lixo) project, which aims to recycle waste into percussion instruments.
Nyllo Canela is now based in Belgium and invites you to discover his world.
